Culture and Society Between the Wars 1918-1939

Illustrated with slides, film clips and documentary.

Saturday Courses at City College, Brighton
The Novel as Social History 6: Comparing Fact & Fiction 1900-1950
Within the pages of the novel we discover more than just a story. We study the social and cultural history of the novel by exploring the background information we are absorbing unwittingly and which is the main theme. THIS TERM: we compare the information from factual accounts, such as diaries, with that found in period novels – e.g, we look at ‘Nella Last’s War’, witty diaries of ‘Housewife 49’ from the Mass Observation Survey, in contrast with a same-period novel, ‘At Mrs Lippincote’s’ by Elizabeth Taylor. a reading list is available from the tutor and you will be expected to participate in group discussion.
5 fortnightly Saturdays 11am-1pm start 24 September
Fee £60 concessions: £42, £21
Ref: COM076

The Film of the Novel 1: 1900-1940s
We study novels and extracts of films by reading books and viewing film clips and comparing them. There was a great wealth of literature and many fascinating films which provide us with unwitting testimony of how people lived, worked, spent their leisure, how they formed relationships and dealt with various situations. Novels and films include the Hitchcock movie, Young and Innocent, which was completely different from the novel on which it was very loosely based, ‘A Shilling for Candles’ by Josephine Tey.
5 fortnightly Saturdays 2-4pm start 24 September
Fee £60 concessions: £42, £21

Single Saturday at City College, Brighton
The Homefront in Wartime: WWI & WWII
It is thought that women in the First World War stayed at home or became nurses. They worked as surgeons, on farms, in munitions factories, driving heavy vehicles and on the railways. During the Second World War women gladly 'did their bit' for their country in factories, as Land Army Girls and this time, more of them actually in the Forces. In both wars, life continued on the Home-front. WWII women refined their skills at ‘make do and mend’, rationing food and using various substances when make-up ran out – such as gravy browning on their legs. Men and women worked side by side at volunteer duties such as fire-watching.  Illustrated.
