Another exciting and unusual study day at the West Pier Centre
GRAHAM GREENE'S BRIGHTON ROCK AT THE WEST PIER STUDY DAY

We study social, cultural, local and seaside pier history, characters and events within Graham Greene’s 1930s novel, set a decade on from Patrick Hamilton’s West Pier, showing the seedier side of life in the town, slums and racecourse razor gangs.

In the 1930s it cost 4d -about 2p- to hire a beach deckchair, in 2023 it is £4!

Morning session will be followed by a short seafront tour.  After lunch there is an illustrated powerpoint slideshow showing the history of Brighton and its people in the 1930s, life in town and on seafront and history of the West, Palace and seaside piers.

You'll be greeted with tea, coffee or cold drink and biscuits. Bring a packed lunch to eat on the beach or forecourt. There are many nearby cafes.
.
Please read the short novel before the session.

TAKING TEA: A History of tea, its consumption and the food eaten with it.

Tea Leaf to Tea Bag

Sarah will be telling you about the fascinating rituals of tea drinking from 2732 BC and of its popularity during the Georgian, and particularly Victorian, periods when it is seen in all its splendour.  The afternoon tea table was filled with elegant silver and beautiful china.  Tea drinking brought about the production of items from teapots to tea tables which will be demonstrated over two powerpoint presentations.

Paul will be showing you delicious delights from the tea table as he explains how and when they became popular, particulary those from the Regency era. He will send you  a workbook with all details, recipes and ingredients for you to try at home.

Gorgeous Georgians: Life in 18th Century England
We study the elegant magnificence of the buildings and stunningly lavish life of a small handful of society, contrasted with the devastatingly poor members of the lower class who lived in abject poverty, and the grim goings-on of the underworld of pickpockets, prostitutes, thieves, gamblers and gin-drinkers - of all classes!

Not only a time of intrigue, debt and excess but also many interesting and colourful personalities - men and women who wrote, painted, sculpted, made beautiful gold, silver, glass or pottery; dressed in the extremes of fashion, were witty or worthless, talented and intellectual, but never dull. A hugely fascinating period.

Illustrated with powerpoint slideshows.
